On Thursday, March 7, another law enforcement agency informed NC State University Police that it had received a tip that a student, who was not on campus at the time, may have weapons in his car and that it might be parked on or near campus. No threats to campus or any individuals had been made.
University Police immediately responded and located the student’s vehicle in the Dan Allen parking deck on campus and noticed items in plain view that appeared to be gun accessories. Police quickly obtained a search warrant, searched the vehicle and obtained the weapons and accessories. This was done the same day, March 7.
Having quickly located the vehicle and seized the weapons, and knowing that the student had remained off-campus, police determined there was no cause for a Wolf Alert. This situation did not meet Clery requirements for notification and there was no need for unnecessary alarm.
On March 20, 2019, the suspect in this case was arrested and charged with Possession of Gun on Educational Property and Possession of a Weapon on Educational Property. Additional information is contained at https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article228220229.html.
